Edit Your FAFSA
When to Edit
When you file a FAFSA, you are providing a snapshot of your family's financial situation as of the date you signed the original application. If your SAR doesn't accurately reflect that information, then corrections may be needed. If it does, edits are not accepted even if your financial situation has since changed. In this case, you should call or visit OSFA.
What You Can Edit
You can correct data entry errors (such as a misspelled name), update information, and add or remove schools. If any data entry errors were made by the federal processor or if you need to make changes or correct any information on your FAFSA, you have a few options:
- If you filed the FAFSA electronically, you can edit the information online. You (and your parent, if dependent) will need to re-sign with your PIN(s) to certify the corrections.
- If you filed the paper FAFSA, you can use Part 2 of the SAR to make the corrections. You (and your parent, if dependent) must sign the Certification section of the SAR before returning it to the federal processor.
- If you need help, you may call our office for assistance. It is possible for OSFA to make some corrections for you, but the administrator may request that you provide various documents on which the corrections are based.
You cannot cancel a FAFSA once it has been submitted. You also cannot change your date of birth or social security number online. If you need to make these changes, you have two options:
- If the error was the fault of the federal processor, you may call the federal processor at 800.433.3243. They will correct it for you and send you a new SAR.
- If the error was yours, you can write the correct Social Security Number in Part 2 of the paper SAR and mail to the federal processor.
After you have completed making changes or corrections, a revised SAR reflecting these corrections will be sent to you and to the University.
